Anaheim Ducks

As a team founded by the Walt Disney Corporation*, inspired by a children’s movie about a ragtag bunch of kids who learn to win by skating in a V formation, and named after a quacking aquatic avian not known for its grace on ice, it was pretty easy to laugh at the Anaheim Ducks (or Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, as they were initially known) when they joined the NHL as an expansion franchise in 1993. The team waddled around a bit initially but took flight in the mid-1990s after drafting the diminutive but supremely skilled and speedy Paul Kariya, who partnered with goalhound Teemu Selanne to lead the Ducks into their first ever postseason campaigns. Selanne departed for the rival San Jose Sharks in 2001, but Kariya stayed on, inspiring the Ducks to their first great playoff run in 2003. Sweeping both the Detroit Red Wings and Minnesota Wild en route, the Ducks progressed all the way to their first-ever Stanley Cup Finals, where they faced off against the two-time champion New Jersey Devils. Intriguingly the series also featured a family feud, with brothers Scott and Rob Niedermayer suiting up at opposite ends of the ice. Despite suffering some harsh physical treatment, Kariya managed to take his Ducks all the way to Game Seven, where they fell at the final hurdle 3-0 away in New Jersey. Kariya was gone four years later when the team got a shot at redemption, taking on the Ottawa Senators for a chance to drink from Lord Stanley’s Cup. This time, the Ducks made no mistake, winning the series in five games to become the first-ever California-based NHL champions. The Ducks remained playoff contenders for many years after, but have recently tailed off, missing the postseason in the last six straight seasons. Ducks fans will be looking to see their team take to wing and climb back into contention in the seasons to come.

*Although not an overnight success on the ice, the Ducks were an immediate hit in the gift shop, with their kid-friendly Disneyfied merchandise outselling all other teams in the NHL combined and accounting for an astounding 80% of total NHL merchandise sales.
