Argentina National Soccer Team

The Argentina National Soccer Team is one of the most successful national soccer teams on the planet, as well as one of the most easily recognizable with their vertical white and sky blue striped shirts (from which they derive their nickname, La Albiceleste). It actually took Argentina quite some time to emerge as one of the world’s dominant soccer powers, however, as they were overshadowed by other South American powers like Uruguay and archrivals Brazil, who together claimed 5 of the first 9 FIFA World Cups (in fact, Argentina actually lost the very first World Cup Final 4-2 to Uruguay, way back in 1930). Argentina’s turn came at last in 1978, when they both hosted the World Cup tournament and ended up lifting the trophy, albeit under a dark cloud of controversy due to the brutal military dictatorship that ruled the country at the time and the influence it is alleged to have had on the tournament itself. Controversy of a different sort returned again en route to their 1986 World Cup victory, when Diego Maradona, one of the greatest players of all time, handled the ball past England’s keeper for his opening goal in the knockout stages, which was somehow missed by the referee (to be fair, he then dribbled around the entire English team to score a brilliant second). When asked if he had handled the ball, Maradona replied enigmatically, “It was the hand of God” and thus his first infamous goal became known ever thus as “the hand of God goal.” Argentina went on to beat West Germany 3-2 in a thrilling World Cup Final. The troubled genius even managed to drag a much weaker Argentina side to the Final in 1990 as well, but the Germans got their revenge that time, winning 1-0 after Argentina lost two players to red cards. It would take a 36-year wait, another Final loss 1-0 to the Germans (in 2014), and the emergence of another pint-sized dribbling genius for Argentina to win the World Cup again. Global superstar Lionel Messi, who made his career winning trophies for Barcelona in Spain, took the world by storm in the 2000s, setting unearthly scoring records and putting up highlight reel goals so frequently that they became almost mundane. After disappointments in four World Cups, the whole world was watching as Messi took to the field at Qatar 2022 and he did not disappoint, leading Argentina to victory in one of the greatest World Cup Finals of all time, scoring twice and slotting home a penalty in the shootout after the game finished 3-3 after extra time. Argentina are currently not only defending World Cup champions but also Copa America champions as well. They will be defending their Copa America title in the United States in the summer of 2024, a tournament which could be Messi’s last. Don’t miss it!

Argentina National Soccer Team Rivalries

Argentina has made their fair share of enemies over the years, both due to simple envy over the quality of their players to the, um, darker arts that they have occasionally (occasionally?) employed. Top of the list has to be Brazil, who long dominated the conversation as the greatest soccer power of South America (and the world) and boasted its best ever player in Pele, though nowadays Argentinians can point to Messi and Maradona as well as their three World Cups (Brazil still has five, however, a fact that Argentinians are loathe to recall). Every clash between these two titans is always one of the biggest events in the sporting world. Argentina also has rivalries with most other South American countries, as well as with England (the hand of God, the David Beckham red card…) and Germany, against whom they have played in three World Cup Finals

Are Argentina National Soccer Team games exciting?

Going to an Argentina National Soccer Team match, especially right now with Lionel Messi still on the team, will be one of the most memorable moments of your life. Along with the magic (and the dark arts…) that you will witness on the field, the passion of their supporters verges on religious zeal, with Albiceleste flags and shirts filling the stands of any stadium where they play. Any soccer game involving Argentina is far more than just a soccer game, it is a cultural event that shows the country’s deep love of their team and the sport!
