Buffalo Bills

LACES OUT! While the 1990s screwball comedy movie Ace Ventura (starring Jim Carrey) purportedly referred to the Miami Dolphins, everyone who knew anything about football at the time instantly recognized it as a reference to the most painful moment in Buffalo Bills history. After so many years struggling to make the playoffs at all, the Bills finally found their feet in the late 1980s and got all the way to Super Bowl XXV in 1990. Down 20-19 to the New York Giants, Bills’ placekicker Scott Norwood lined up a field goal for a dramatic last second victory, but it was not to be. Apparently the laces were out, as they should be for a field goal attempt, but the hold was not perfect and neither was Norwood’s kick. The ball sailed “wide right” (which went on to become a famous line in Bills and league lore…) and the Bills missed out on their first-ever championship. This was a feeling that they were to get very accustomed to in the following years, going on to lose three more Super Bowls (XXVI, XXVIII, XXIX) in a row between 1991-1993, though none in quite such dramatic fashion as the first. Long-suffering but loyal Bills fans were probably wondering if their team’s chances were gone forever during the lean years of 2000-2016, when their team did not qualify for the postseason once. In recent years, however, the Bills have given their supporters cause for hope, winning four playoff rounds in the past three years, including a narrow loss in the AFC Championship to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020. 2023 has seen the team struggle with consistency, but Bills fans will remain hopeful that their team can spring a few surprises and redress their painful Super Bowl legacy at last.

How can I get cheap tickets to Buffalo Bills games?

For a team best known around the country for losing one of the most dramatic Super Bowls in NFL history (as well as the next 3 Super Bowls in a row…), the Buffalo Bills have maintained an incredibly devoted fan base in upstate New York. No matter the weather (and it can be cold), fans keep on donning jackets, wooly sweaters, and hats to come cheer on their team at historic Highmark Stadium. While this is great for game day atmosphere, it can make tickets difficult to find, particularly for key regular season deciders, postseason playoff games, or rivalry matchups (see below). Buffalo Bills Rivalries

The Buffalo Bills have local regional and divisional rivalries with the New England Patriots and New York Jets, though their most intense divisional rivals were historically the Miami Dolphins, as Bills’ quarterback Jim Kelly battled the legendary Dan Marino of the Dolphins through the 1980s and 1990s. The rivalry has cooled slightly these days, replaced by animosity directed towards Tom Brady and the Patriots, but Bills fans, if you ask them, still hate the Dolphins a lot! Since Brady’s retirement, Bills fans have found a new quarterback rivalry to follow, with the BillsJosh Allen vying with Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs for the title of the best quarterback in the NFL. The Bills also have relatively new rivalries with the upstart Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars based on several controversial and dramatic episodes in playoff games with those two teams.

Are Buffalo Bills football games exciting?

Going to a Buffalo Bills football game at Highmark Stadium is a lot of fun. Fans, known as Bills Mafia, brave all kinds of weather to down their red, white, and blue to come cheer on the home team. Buffalo as a city has been through hard times over the years and so the football team is really something that many people cling to for a sense of community and fellowship. Tailgating is immensely popular, with the parking lots around historic Highmark Stadium transforming into a sea of team colors as Bills fans congregate to eat, drink, and rev themselves up for the big game. Inside the stadium, Bills fans go wild when the classic song "Shout!" by the Isley Brothers plays, bringing everyone up to their feet.
