Florida Gators Football

The Florida Gators football team has represented the University of Florida for well over a century, founded in 1906 and adopting its scaly nickname in 1911. The Gators were not all that well known as a college team until the 1960s, when they found success with head coach Ray Graves and led by the powerful arm of Heisman Trophy winner Steve Spurrier, who would go on to play in the NFL for ten seasons before becoming a coach. Spurrier would in fact return to the Gators in 1990 as a coach, a time when the team vaulted into the elite levels of college football in America, winning a huge array of honors, including three national titles (claimed), and becoming a nationally recognized brand nationwide. In Bowl games, the Gators hold an even record throughout their history, with 24 wins and 24 losses overall.

Florida Gators football rivalries

The Florida Gators have two big rivals within their state, the Florida State Seminoles and the Miami Hurricanes, both of which they have played in the Sugar Bowl with national championships on the line. The Gators are a part of the heated Florida-Alabama college football rivalry, making for particularly heated games against the Auburn Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Georgia Bulldogs (especially, as the two schools have loathed one another for many years!). The Gators also have strong rivalries with the Kentucky Wildcats, LSU Tigers, and Tennessee Volunteers.

Are Florida Gators football games exciting?

The Gators currently play their home games in the large Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, dubbed “The Swamp” by Spurrier in the early 1990s, and enjoy a huge home field advantage there due to the passionate support of their fans (and possibly the hot and humid “swampy” climate too!). To experience the local fan culture in full, try tailgating or head to the Gator Walk just outside the stadium, where you can enjoy music, food, and drinks along with thousands of other fans as the excitement builds up until kickoff.
