Florida Panthers

For most hockey fans in the early 1990s, the idea of putting an NHL franchise in Florida sounded about as smart as starting a beach volleyball team in northern Manitoba. That is exactly what the league did though, twice, launching not only the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992 but also the Florida Panthers in 1993, the same year as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (causing laughter and outright scorn from hockey purists). The Panthers actually somewhat answered their critics in their first season, recording the best ever debut record for an expansion team, though this was still not enough to get the team into the playoffs. When the Panthers did make it to the postseason for the first time in 1996, however, they defied even the wildest predictions when they defeated the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers before defeating Mario Lemieux’s Pittsburgh Penguins in a dramatic seven-game series to reach the Stanley Cup Finals in just the third year of their existence. Unfortunately (for the Panthers), they found themselves up against a force of nature in the Colorado Avalanche, who swept them aside in four games. This deep playoff run had seemed promising, but it soon appeared to be a blip rather than an evolution, as the Panthers soon slumped into season after season of losing records, qualifying for the playoffs just six times between 1997-2021 and never winning a series to progress past the First Round. In 2022, the Panthers finally broke the hex, defeating the Washington Capitals in six before being swept by the Lightning in the Conference Semifinals. This time, though, it did turn out to be a sign of things to come, as the 2023 Panthers surged past the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Carolina Hurricanes to set up a date against the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Finals. The new expansion team proved too much for the Black Cats, however, dispatching them in five games to lift the Cup. Panthers fans will be hoping this time that their team will keep making the playoffs and maybe even take that final step to bring the Stanley Cup home to the NHL’s southernmost franchise.
