Georgia Bulldogs Football

The Georgia Bulldogs football team has represented the University of Georgia, located about an hour’s drive north of Atlanta in the small town of Athens, since 1892. The origins of their canine moniker are unclear, as they initially had a live goat in a sweater as their mascot, but the team gradually acquired the nickname of Bulldogs and adopted it officially in the early 1920s. The team mascot is no man in a suit but an actual white English bulldog named Uga. The Bulldogs are currently on Uga XIl, with Ugas who have passed on (rather eerily) buried in a mausoleum inside the stadium. On the field, the Bulldogs have proven to be a pretty fierce outfit, amassing an enviable trophy cabinet of 8 national titles (4 claimed, 4 unclaimed), 16 conference titles, and a remarkable 38 Bowl games wins (for an overall record of 38-21-3 in Bowl games). The team is also 11th in America for all-time total wins (881) and have produced many top NFL players, such as Herschel Walker and Terrell Davis. In recent years (2016-2023) under head coach Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs have been particularly successful, winning back to back national championships in 2021 and 2022 as well as 5 straight Bowl wins (in the order of Sugar, Peach, Orange, Peach, Orange–rather deliciously!). In 2022, the Bulldogs achieved a perfect season with a record of 15-0. Bulldog Nation, as the legions of Georgia fans who fill the stands of Sanford Stadium with the red, black, and silver of their team are known, help their team by creating one of the loudest (and for opposing teams, most intimidating) atmospheres in college football. Along with the marching band, fans gleefully raised their voices to sing “Glory Glory” and “The Battle Hymn of the Bulldog Nation” and chant "How 'bout them Dawgs" and "Go Dawgs (Sic 'em Woof Woof Woof).” After a Bulldogs victory, the bells in the campus chapel are rung right through until midnight, with fans, students, and alumni taking turns at the bell pull.

Georgia Bulldogs Rivalries

With their tenacious play on the field and the fearsome atmosphere generated by their home fans, it is perhaps no surprise that the Georgia Bulldogs have made their share of enemies over the years. Their three biggest rivalries are the Auburn Tigers, Clemson Tigers, and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The clashes with Auburn are known as the Deep South’s oldest rivalry, the all-time series remained quite close until recent years (it was tied in 2014), but Georgia has dominated in recent seasons, extending their advantage to 64-56-8. The Bulldogs have also dominated Clemson and Georgia Tech (in a series known as “Clean, Old Fashioned Hate”) especially in the past few decades. Encounters with the Florida Gators, which take place on neutral ground in Jacksonville, are known as much for their wild tailgating parties (dubbed The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party) as the action on the field. The Bulldogs also have long rivalries with the South Carolina Gamecocks, Tennessee Volunteers, and Alabama Crimson Tide. Alabama is the only rival to have the beating of the Bulldogs, leading their all-time series at 43-26-4.

Finding Georgia Bulldogs Football Tickets

With so much success on the field, so much fun in the stands, and the large city of Atlanta just a short drive away, it is perhaps unsurprising that despite the large stadium, landing a ticket to a Georgia Bulldogs game can be a difficult proposition, especially for Bowl games, key conference matchups, or games against rival schools (see above). To find affordable Georgia Bulldogs tickets, your best option is always TicketX.
