Indiana Hoosiers Basketball

The Hoosiers basketball team has quite the history in Division 1 competition, both in conference, with 22 Big Ten victories, and nationally, with 41 qualifications for the NCAA March Madness postseason basketball tournament including 22 Sweet 16 appearances, 11 Elite 8 appearances, and 8 Final Four appearances. Six of those eight trips to the Final Four resulted in the , the Hoosiers making it to the championship final. Of those finals, the Hoosiers won the first five to become five-time NCAA tournament champions. Unfortunately, their most recent final in 2002  did not go quite as well, as the Hoosiers lost to the Maryland Terrapins by a score of 64-52. Many fine Hoosiers have moved on to great careers in the NBA, none more than superstar Isaiah Thomas, perennial All Star and two-time NBA champion with the  Detroit Pistons, but also Walt Bellamy, George McGinnis, and Dick Van Arsdale. In recent years, the Hoosiers have been rather inconsistent, spending five years outside the March Madness tournament before returning in 2022 and 2023. With such a long and proud history, Hoosiers fans will be hoping to see a return to glory for their team in 2024 and the years to come.

Indiana Hoosiers Rivalries

The Indiana Hoosiers have an intense and long-standing state rivalry with the Purdue Boilermakers, with the two teams battling for bragging rights over the hoops-mad state of Indiana since their first meeting in 1901. Indiana and Purdue have played at least once a year ever since, with Purdue holding the upper hand all-time by a margin of 126-92 and slightly edging the Hoosiers in terms of Big Ten Conference titles (25 to the Hoosiers’ 22). The Boilermakers still stare across the state enviously at Indiana’s record of 5 NCAA championship titles, however, as Purdue has never won a national title. The Hoosiers-Boilermakers rivalry is recognized nationally as one of the greatest college basketball rivalries in America and the teams’ annual games result in great excitement and anticipation.

Are Indiana Hoosiers basketball games exciting?

While the 1980 Hollywood film Hoosiers is not actually about the university basketball team (it is about a high school basketball team in Indiana), it does a good job of conveying the depth of the passion for basketball in the state (and it’s a great film, go watch it!). “Hoosiers” is actually a long-standing nickname for residents of Indiana that was originally an insult used by people from other states, but has become a term of endearment and pride across Indiana. The Indiana Hoosiers basketball teamis thus seen as the embodiment of the state and so is supported by some of the most passionate fans in the NCAA. Fans are known for showing up in huge numbers, clad in their cream and crimson, to cheer on their Hoosiers to victory. During the third overtime of the second half in every game, the Indiana Big Red Basketball Band bursts into a rendition of the William Tell Overture and cheerleaders gallop around the court with flags to spell out the team’s name.
