Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs and their legions of red-clad fans clad are on top of the world right now following the team’s edge-of-the-seat victory last year in Super Bowl LVII, which saw the Chiefs hold on to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35, with a single late field goal proving the difference. It was a second championship title for the Chiefs in just four years, thanks in no small part to their record-shattering quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who became the team’s starting pivot in 2017. The 2019 Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 had been particularly monumental for the Chiefs, as it was their first championship since 1969, the year before the AFL-NFL merger. Mahomes won the MVP in both Super Bowl victories, marshaling his offense and tossing several key touchdown passes. The Chiefs even had the chance in 2020, between their two triumphs, to add another Super Bowl to their trophy cabinet, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had other ideas, stealing the silverware with a comprehensive 31-9 victory. In 2022, the team also narrowly missed out on the Big Game when they lost in the AFC Championship to the Cincinnati Bengals 27-24 in overtime. For older Chiefs fans, to think that their team would ever appear in three Super Bowls within just four years would have been unthinkable in the dark days of the 1970s and 80s. In those two decades, the Chiefs made the playoffs just twice, losing on both occasions. Signs of a revival emerged throughout the 1990s, but this did not really translate to much success in the playoffs, and the team soon declined back into missing out on the postseason in the vast majority of seasons. Only in 2013 did the team’s fortunes begin to change, presaging the arrival of Mahomes and the glory that his tenure at Arrowhead Stadium would bring to Kansas City. With the Chiefs looking all but unbeatable again in 2023, the biggest question on everyone’s lips in 2023 is: who, if anyone, can stop them?
