Matt Matthews

Mat Mathews, a determined accordionist, faced an uphill battle with bop-oriented jazz. His journey with music began during the Nazi occupation, but it was a radio broadcast featuring Joe Mooney post-war that ignited his passion for jazz. From 1947 to 1950, Mathews honed his craft locally in Holland, notably collaborating with the Millers.

In 1952, he made the pivotal move to New York, assembling a quartet that showcased rising talents like Herbie Mann on flute and tenor sax. Throughout his career, Mathews collaborated with luminaries such as Art FarmerJulius Watkins, and Oscar Pettiford.

His recordings with Carmen McRae from 1954 to 1955 further solidified his significance in the jazz scene. Despite eventually transitioning to studio work by the end of the decade, his impact in the 1950s cannot be understated. His performances, marked by innovation and skill, championed the accordion's place in jazz.

His work reflects his diverse journey, spanning labels like Van WouwBrunswick, and Verve. Although his later years saw him primarily engaged in studio roles, Mathews' legacy as a pioneer of jazz accordion endures, reminding us of his influence on the genre.

Matt Matthews’ Discographic Achievements

Matt kicked things off in 1944 with the Dutch Van Wouw label, where he debuted four titles, including enchanting tracks like Swingin' on a Star and I Should Care, heralding his early brilliance.

Moving forward to 1953-1954, he ventured into new waters with Brunswick, with albums such as Accordion Solos by Mat Mathews and its sequel featuring gems like Blues in the Night and Laura, showcasing his accordion virtuosity.

By 1956, he had a collaboration with Dawn Records, presenting Accordion and Orchestra, an innovative fusion of traditional accordion melodies with lush orchestral arrangements, highlighted by mesmerizing renditions of classics like Stella by Starlight and Misty.

His stint with Savoy in 1957 yielded Accordion Plus Four, an adventurous album featuring four French horn players, where versatility shone through tracks like Take Five and Round Midnight.

The live recording at Newport in 1957, released under the Verve label, captured the artist’s electrifying stage presence with renditions of timeless classics like All the Things You Are and Summertime.

Subsequent releases under JJM, Design, and Ariola further solidified Mathews' legacy, showcasing his boundless creativity and enduring impact on jazz accordion.
