New York Knicks

“I have to keep reminding myself that the Knicks are still in the league,” quipped comedian David Letterman in a recent show. Alongside fellow perennial underachievers the New York Jets (NFL) and New York Mets (MLB), the New York Knicks have long been the butt of jokes around Manhattan comedy clubs. And yet the team from the Big Apple had quite a promising start to life in the NBA, appearing in three NBA Finals between 1970-73 and emerging as NBA Champions from two of them. There was a resurgence in the 1980s and 1990s under coaches Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy, when the Knicks, led by center Patrick Ewing, became serious playoff contenders again, reaching the NBA Finals on two occasions but falling at the final hurdle to the Houston Rockets (1994) and San Antonio Spurs (1999). After losing Ewing after 15 seasons to Seattle in 2000, the Knicks quickly spun into decline, with two decades of pain for their fans in which the team progressed to the playoffs just four times and only progressed past the First Round once. Recent years have brought encouraging signs under current coach Tom Thibodeau and the talented duo of Julius Randle and Jalen Brunson pouring in points for the Knicks as last season they made their first return to the Eastern Conference Semifinals in ten years, losing 4-2 to eventual finalists the Miami Heat. New Yorkers are known to be a rather cynical bunch, especially when it comes to their basketball team, but fans will go into the 2023-24 season with encouraging signs that more is yet to come from their New York Knicks

New York Knicks Rivalries

Simply being from New York is enough reason for fans from most other cities (particularly Boston) to despise the Knicks, so it is unsurprising that the team has made their fair share of enemies over the years. As part of the great Boston-New York sports rivalry that spans many sports (especially baseball), the Boston Celtics are probably the biggest historic rivals of the New York Knicks. The teams have met 15 times in the NBA playoffs with surprisingly even results, with the Knicks winning 7 and Celtics 8. The Knicks also developed a heated rivalry with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s that featured a number of memorable playoff duels (that the Knicks ended up on the wrong end of, thanks to a certain #23). Since the New Jersey Nets moved across the river to become the Brooklyn Nets, the previous NJ-NYC rivalry has developed into a Big Apple rivalry between the Nets and the Knicks. The Knicks also have a rivalry with the Miami Heat that has occasionally resulted in fisticuffs over the years.

Are New York Knicks basketball games exciting?

New York Knicks fans are well accustomed to suffering, having endured much of it at the hands of what has been at worst a team that simply disappoints its fans and at best a team that builds up its fans’ hopes only to disappoint them. Nonetheless, there is something gloriously and quintessentially New York about the Knicks and the grumbling pessimism of their fans, who, complain as they might, keep coming back year after year for more. For basketball fans, a night out at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan to watch the Knicks is an unforgettable experience.
