San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs entered the NBA in 1976 but instead of stumbling out of the gates like most new teams, they broke into a full gallop, qualifying for the playoffs in their first seven seasons straight and reaching the Western Conference Final on three separate occasions. The Spurs carried this remarkable consistency into the 1980s and 1990s, missing the playoffs just four times (and never two seasons in a row). And yet it was not until the final full season of the millennium that fans were finally rewarded with the one thing they had waited so long for, when their San Antonio Spurs, led by the “Twin Towers,” David Robinson and Tim Duncan, beat the New York Knicks in the 1999 NBA Finals to win their first NBA Championship. It was a feat that the team was to repeat three times in the early 2000s as well as once more in 2014 when a veteran team including Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker overcame the Miami Heat for a 4-1 series win. All of this success was overseen by legendary coach Gregg Popovich, who took over as head coach of the Spurs in 1996 and remains at the helm to this day. He has won more games than any other coach in NBA history. As 2023-24 begins, the Spurs find themselves in unfamiliar territory. The team finished 22-60 last season, rock bottom of the Western Conference, and missed the Playoffs for a fourth consecutive season. Still, with the recent addition of eagerly-anticipated rookie Victor Wembanyama to the roster, there is reason for Spurs fans to hope that the future holds some promise of a return to the glories of their past.

San Antonio Spurs rivalries

The San Antonio Spurs had an incredible rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers between 1999-2005, during which the two teams met in the NBA Playoffs five times in six seasons. They also have a long history against their neighbors from Arizona, the Phoenix Suns, having battled the Suns in the Playoffs on many occasions, all which left most players battered and bruised. Fellow Texans the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets round out the San Antonio Spurs’ list of grudge matches.
