Janet Jackson

One of the most prominent figures in pop culture is American singer, songwriter, actress, and dancer Janet Jackson. Sister to the King of PopMichael Jackson, Janet Jackson, has written her name across the walls of the Hall of Fame. Born in 1966 as the youngest in the famous Jackson family, Janet got an early start in the entertainment industry.

Janet Jackson grew up in a family of musicians and entertainers; her mother played the piano and clarinet, her father was the guitarist for the R&B band, the Falcons, and her brothers, the Jackson 5, a successful music group with Micheal Jackson, the lead. It seems Janet’s path in the music industry was mapped out. She had originally wanted to become an entertainment lawyer, taking a backseat in the industry. However, at 7 years old, she performed with her sisters at the MGM Casino, and from then on, it was set in stone that she was an entertainer.

Janet started her career in the industry as an actress, playing several characters over the next couple of years before her music debut. Her first role was in her family’s variety show, The Jacksons in 1976 at 10 years old. Following this, Janet starred in several shows such as the sitcom The Good Times in 1977 as Penny Gordon Woods, Jojo Ashton in A New Kind of Family, Charlene Duprey in Diff’rent Strokes, and Cleo Hewitt on the fourth season of Fame. During her appearances in these shows in the early 80s,  Janet signed a deal with a record label, kickstarting her career as a musician.

Janet Jackson’s Discography & Achievements

Known for her innovative, socially conscious music and groundbreaking performances, Janet has become an icon in the entertainment industry. Although Janet Jackson debuted with her self-titled debut album in 1982, it wasn’t until her third album, Control, in 1986 that she got her big break after changing her sound. The album spawned five hit singles, with the track, When I Think of You becoming her first number-one entry on the Billboard Top 100 chart. Following this momentum, her albums Rhythm Nation 1814 in 1989 and The Velvet Rope in 1997 were critically acclaimed hits. The former, shattering records, was the first to deliver three number-one hits in three years. Since then, she has released five more albums, making a total of eleven. Her most recent album, Unbreakable, was released in 2015.

Janet Jackson is one of the highest-selling music artists of our time, selling over 100 million records. She has stacked up numerous achievements and accolades in her journey as a musician. Her achievements include prestigious awards and recognition. She has been awarded five times by the Recording Academy (Grammys), eleven times by Billboard Music, likewise at the American Music Awards, and ten times at the MTV Video Music Awards.  In 1998, she received the Artistic Achievement Award at the Billboard Music Awards. In the same year, she won the Vanguard Award at the MTV Music Video Awards. These awards followed the huge success of her sixth album, The Velvet Rope.

Janet Jackson has collaborated with various renowned artists, including Michael Jackson on ScreamMissy Elliott, and Q-Tip. Janet Jackson's popularity stems from her innovative music, which often includes themes of empowerment, social issues, and personal challenges. She is renowned for delivering a total creative music, performance, and production package.
