When it comes to pure star power, not to mention championships, the New York Yankees are in a league all their own within the storied annals of American baseball. The Yankees’ iconic logo and trademark pinstripes are as much a part of what makes the Big Apple the Big Apple as the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, or a night out on Broadway. Initially founded as upstarts to the established New York Giants (who later moved to San Francisco), the team began life as the Highlanders, changing their name to the Yankees in 1922. It proved timely, as the Yankees won the franchise’s first (but definitely not last!) World Series the very next year, led by the near-mythic figure of Babe Ruth, who both pitched and hit for the team. Their renowned “Murderers’ Row” of hitters jolted them towards three more titles, followed up by a string of four consecutive titles from 1936-39 featuring “Joltin’ Joe” DiMaggio, who once went on a 56-game hit streak that is an MLB record that still stands to this day (and many say will never be broken). Just to prove he could do better, manager Casey Stengel led the Yankees to five straight World Series wins, carried by an all-star cast of slugger Mickey Mantle, charismatic catcher Yogi Berra, and pitcher Whitey Ford. The team saw a rare drop-off in the 1980s and early 1990s, but roared back in 1996 to beat the Atlanta Braves 4-2 to win their first World Series in almost twenty years. They then went on a tear in the years to follow, winning three straight World Series from 1998-2000 on the backs of performances by Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Jorge Posada. With their most recent championship win (to date) in 2009, the Yankees reached a total of 27 World Series titles (sixteen more than any other team!). However, that was fourteen years ago and so, after missing the postseason in 2023, Yankees fans will be putting their team under considerable pressure in 2024 to get back on top where they feel that the Yankees always belong.
