The 1975

In 2002, Wilmslow, Cheshire, saw the formation of an unprecedentedly compelling pop-rock band dubbed The 1975. Matthew Healy, Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald, and George Daniel came together in a dizzying but riveting combination of indie, rock, pop, electronic, funk, and alternative, creating a sound that truly cut away the competition and captured its listeners in a unique way, refusing to let them go. The name, which was inspired by a Jack Kerouac book, broke through the bounds of the UK market and attained a global relevance that is worthy of note today. Their career boasts over 2 decades of impact and momentum, making them one of the most prominent music groups on the international scene today. Their sound, which was the spark for their popularity and success, can be described as a descriptive portrait of the angst and realities that surround youthfulness, love, sex, and identity.

The group was formed while the members of the gang were still attending Wilmslow High School. They started out by playing small gigs in their town, igniting what would turn out to be an expansive and influential career. Matthew Healy, son of Tim Healy and Denise Welch, is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the band, while Ross MacDonald is the bassist, popular for his melodic bass lines. Adam Hann is the lead guitarist who has a reputation for precise and intricate melodies, and George Daniel is The 1975’s drummer and producer who makes his mark by curating the band’s unique sound and production style.

Ever since the group’s inception, The 1975 has consistently made a play for innovation, combining and blending distinct genres to create music that truly stands out in the contemporary space, its extensive discography and international success being the very proof of it. The band has also had numerous collaborations over the course of their career, one of which was the rumored Taylor Swift collab that has unfortunately not amounted to anything more than a controversial rumor.

The 1975 Discography

Right from its hometown in Wilmslow, the band started to drop EPs and singles even before it broke into the market. The 1975 created a buzz around their sound with titles like Facedown, which was its debut EP released in August 2012. The band released a second EP in November of the same year titled Sex. By this time, it had begun to build a foundation. Its 3rd and 4th EPs, Music for Cars and IV, were released in 2013, acting as a segue into the band’s breakout album, which was also its debut: The 1975. The eponymous project was the drive to establish the members of the group as a new voice in the UK to be reckoned with. The album brought them widespread acclaim and acted as a launching pad for the rest of their career. The project featured mega hits like Chocolate, and Girls.

The album was followed up by I Like it When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It, their second album project, which was released in February 2016, featuring a more dynamic range of sounds. By the time the band’s third studio album was released, the group was undeniable. The gang became a differentiated unit that brazenly explored different facets of music through unexpected themes. The third album received critical acclaim for its foray into the theme of modern society in the digital age. A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships was released in 2018, followed by the fourth project released in 2020, Notes on a Conditional Form.

Being Funny in a Foreign Language is the band’s newest album project. It was released in 2022 and has since been called a masterpiece, giving The 1975 fans something different from the previous albums while also retaining the most beloved parts of the band’s sound.

In addition to its numerous projects, The 1975 has a lengthy line-up of singles that have also made the rounds. You cannot have a conversation about The 1975 without referencing songs like Somebody Else, Robbers, People, Love It If We Made It, and Looking For Somebody, among others. Although released under different projects, these songs made their own marks and stood out even from a discography as consistently impressive as that of the group.
