The Piano Guys

The Piano Guys are a renowned American musical ensemble. The group comprises pianist Jon Schmidt, cellist Steven Sharp Nelson, videographer Paul Anderson, and music producer Al van der Beek. Originating in Utah, the guys’ rise to fame began on YouTube in 2011. On the platform, they showcased piano and cello compositions blending classical, pop, and original sounds.

Soon after sharing their music, their rather elaborate videos garnered over 2 billion views and 6.7 million subscribers by March 2020. Also, their studio albums, which span classical and new-age genres,  consistently topped Billboard charts.

Initially, the project served as a social media strategy for Anderson's Piano store. Later it evolved into a full-fledged musical endeavor. Schmidt and Nelson's collaboration gained attention with the viral video Love Story Meets Viva la Vida, prompting them to film more videos for promotion.

With the addition of van der Beek, productions expanded. They garnered acclaim and awards, including the YouTube "On the Rise" win. Eventually, their focus shifted entirely to music videos. As such, the piano store was shuttered in 2012.

Through dedication and innovation, The Piano Guys have not stopped captivating audiences worldwide with their unique blend of musical prowess and visual storytelling.

The Piano Guys’ Discographic Achievements

By September 2012, The Piano Guys had accumulated over 134 million views and 757,000 subscribers on YouTube. These records led to a deal with Sony Masterworks, one that was facilitated by David Simoné and DSW Management.

Their eponymous debut album achieved gold status, followed by successful releases like The Piano Guys 2, A Family Christmas, and Wonders. Their fifth album, Uncharted, and a subsequent Christmas album, Christmas Together, were well-received. Limitless was their seventh major-label release in 2018. In 2020, they put out 10, marking their 10th anniversary and 10th album.

Musically, The Piano Guys blend classical, pop, and film score elements. They have become famous for their creative mashups like Mozart and Adele or Vivaldi's Winter and Disney's Let It Go. With Schmidt, Nelson, and van der Beek as songwriters, they infuse their compositions with originality and versatility.

The guys’ rendition of A Thousand Years is their most-watched video, exemplifying appeal and innovative approach.

Upcoming The Piano Guys’ Events in 2024

The group are to embark on their first-ever Australian tour. Starting in Brisbane on September 28, the tour moves to Perth, Sydney, and Melbourne, in that order.  But in the United States, they are to perform in Charlotte, on April 26 at the Ovens Auditorium. They'll then go to the Pikes Peak Center in Colorado Springs, on May 14, and the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison on May 15.

Their campaign continues with a series of shows in Sandy, Utah, at the Sandy Amphitheater on September 5, 6, and 7; multiple opportunities for fans back home to experience their music live. From there, they head to Portland, at the Merrill Auditorium on September 18, and to Medford, at the Chevalier Theatre on September 19.

Also, the Piano Guys will go to Red Bank at the Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center on September 20 before heading to Durham for a show at the DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center on September 24.
