Usher

Born Usher Terry Raymond IV on October 14th, 1978, in Dallas, Texas, and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Usher started singing in a church choir before his teens. After his family’s relocation to Atlanta, Georgia, he joined a local group, along which lines he was discovered by a record label for his Star Search appearance.

When he was 16, Usher released his namesake debut. However, he found success with his My Way record in 1997. While trying to double down on his acting career and racking up hit singles, albums, and awards, he started showing off his dance moves on tour to much admiration.

Usher signed his first recording contract at the age of 13, with LaFace Records. After putting out his first album in 1994, he soon became known for polished vocals, sexy dance moves, chic style, and sensual ballads. Since then, he has been a dominating player in the industry, having moved across several music genres, including R&B, pop, and blues.

Rise to fame

After Usher (1994), the artist unveiled his second album, My Way (1997). The body of work, including the single Nice & Slow--which became his first top hit-- and You Make Me Wanna, skyrocketed Usher to fame.

The album has sold over 7 million copies to date, praising Usher for his fluid vocals and addictive melodies. Through this album, he also became known for infusing sexual themes into his songs, performances, and music videos.

In 2001, Usher unveiled 8701, an incredibly successful album with a chart-topping song U Got It Bad. From the album also came a pair of Grammy Award-winning singles: U Remind Me, and U Don’t Have to Call. In the United States only, over 4 million copies of the album have been sold.

A decade after his first album, Usher came with Confessions (2004), another well-received piece. Over 1 million copies were sold in the work’s first week, and worldwide sales reached 20 million. The album comprised number-one songs such as BurnConfessions Part II, and Yeah!, wherein he linked up with Lil Jon and Ludacris to hold the Billboard Hot 1000’s top spot for 12 weeks.

Later, Billboard named Yeah! The Hot 100 Single of the Year. After that, his duet with Alicia KeysMy Boo, which was released in 2004, landed him another number one spot on the chart. At the time, Usher already had an impressive track record, with 13 top 20 hits, half of which were number one singles.

To crown his efforts, Usher was named Artist of the Year at the 2004 Billboard Music Awards, a year after which he got three Grammy Awards: Best Contemporary R&B Album for Confessions, Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group for My Boo, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for Yeah!.

Usher’s other key engagements

Outside his music career, Usher has worked as a stage and movie actor. His earliest role was in a 1998 teen horror film titled The Faculty. He also made guest appearances on a number of TV shows, including as Marvin Gaye on 2002’s American Dreams, as a disc jockey in a 2005 movie named In The Mix, and as Billy Flynn in the Broadway play Chicago in 2006.

Usher returned to reality TV in March 2013, this time as a judge and performance coach. Alongside Latin singer Shakira, he joined NBC’s singing contest The Voice for its fourth season. As replacements for Lo Green and Christina Aguilera, Usher and Shakira starred on the show with other returning judges, including Blake Shelton and Adam Levine.

Sooner than later, Usher won over television viewers thanks to his offbeat style of coaching. In spite of his success, he decided to miss the next season. Nevertheless, he returned for the show’s sixth installment and, to his personal delight, experienced his protege Josh Kaufaman emerge victorious.

Beyond shows and performances, Usher stays busy with charity. He founded the New Look Foundation in 1999 to provide funding for children in foster care and service initiatives. The organization holds camps and conferences for at-risk youth and promotes leadership training for children in less privileged communities.

His efforts with the nonprofit have garnered him honors from groups such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the Trumpet Foundation.

In addition, Usher has invested in many entrepreneurial pursuits. He owns U.S. Records and a men’s cologne line. The talent is also a part-owner of the music streaming platform Tidal and co-owns the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team.
