Built in 1997 to be the new home of the San Diego State Aztecs men’s and women’s basketball teams, the Viejas Arena is also one of San Diego’s major venues for sporting competitions, pro wrestling events, and major concerts. The Aztecs men’s basketball team were for many decades no more than an obscure regional team, only joining Division 1 in 1969 and making just 3 appearances in the NCAA March Madness postseason basketball tournament prior to 2000. Everything changed after the turn of the millennium, though, with the Aztecs not only qualifying for 12 March Madness tournaments and progressing to the Sweet 16 on 3 occasions, but also storming through all the way through the Final Four to the NCAA championship final game in 2023. Unfortunately for the Aztecs, they came up against a powerful UConn Huskies team and were defeated by a score of 76–59, but it was nonetheless a huge accomplishment that put the Aztecs basketball program firmly on the radar of college hoops fans everywhere. Fans in San Diego really got behind their team during the incredible season, not only selling out the Viejas Arena but even traveling in considerable numbers to away games and March Madness tournament matchups. No doubt this momentum will carry into future seasons with expectations riding high for the Aztecs.
