YOASOBI

YOASOBI, a Japanese pop duo formed in 2019 by vocaloid producer Ayase and singer/songwriter ikura, quickly rose to fame with their novel approach of turning literature into music. Their debut single "Yoru ni Kakeru" achieved unprecedented success, topping the Billboard Japan Hot 100 for six weeks and earning the first-ever diamond streaming certification from RIAJ. They also set records with other diamond-certified songs like "Gunjō," "Kaibutsu," and "Idol," the last of which broke the record for the longest-running number one on the Japan Hot 100 and gained international acclaim. The duo has released three EPs in Japanese and two in English, all receiving critical acclaim and peaking at number two on the Oricon Albums Chart. Their innovative work has led to collaborations with prominent novelists and a collection of short stories. YOASOBI's significant contributions to music and culture have been recognized with numerous awards, including ten Japan Gold Disc Awards, five CD Shop Awards, and more, showcasing their profound impact in a short span.

How did YOASOBI rise to fame?

With the unique concept of "turning novels into music," YOASOBI create songs based on short stories posted on a creative writing social media website called monogatary.com. The formation of the group began when Ayase found ikura's Instagram cover video and approached her. The name YOASOBI was named by Ayase to represent the two forms of day and night. They released their debut single "Yoru ni Kakeru" in October 2019, and the song became their representative song, reaching number 1 on Spotify and LINE MUSIC charts. In addition, the music video surpassed 10 million views on YouTube within 5 months of its release, and has since recorded 100 million views. YOASOBI continued to enjoy success, with "Yoru ni Kakeru" winning awards at Billboard Japan and the MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2020, as well as the overall top spot on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 annual list. They also released their first CD release, the EP "THE BOOK" and "Kaibutsu," the opening theme for the second season of the TV anime "BEASTARS. They also gained media exposure, including having their first TV show, and participated in the NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen (Red and White Singing Contest). In 2023, they released "Idol," the opening theme for the TV anime "Oshi no Ko," which became a worldwide hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. YOASOBI continues to receive acclaim from within and outside the music industry for his talent and unique approach.
