Babymetal is a compelling Japanese girl band acting as a poster child for the Kawaii metalmusic genre. Kawaii metal is a subgenre fusing aspects of Japanese pop (or J-pop) with heavy metal to make its own sound. The band was formed in 2010, consisting of three members until one of them dropped out. Now functioning as a duo, the band is known for its ability to uphold the metal genre while infusing it with a hint of something softer.

Babymetal was initially a subunit of Sakura Gakuin, a Japanese idol group. They broke off in 2013 to form their own unit and have now become one of the most popular metal bands in the international scene today. Su-metal and Moametal are the band’s leading acts and have been since Yui Mizuno (the third member) left the band in 2018. The Japanese metal group has released four studio albums, starting with their self-titled debut in 2014, Babymetal. This was followed by Metal Resistance in 2016, then Metal Galaxy and The Other One. Their third and fourth albums were released in 2019 and 2023.

In between their project releases, the band went on numerous local and international tours, some of which were collaborative, and others in promotion of their album projects.
