Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors began life on the opposite side of the country as the Philadelphia Warriors. The team won a championship title in 1947 followed by a second in 1956 before they were relocated to California and renamed the San Francisco Warriors, though they frequently played home games in nearby Oakland and San Jose as well. After being renamed the Golden State Warriors in 1971, the name they have kept with them until present day, the team won their first NBA Championship in California in 1975 in a huge upset of the Washington Bullets. Golden State fans had a long wait for more title success, however, as the team were perennial strugglers for many years despite a surge in the late 1980s and early 1990s led by the Run TMC trio of Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin. Those same fans’ patience has finally been rewarded in recent years, following the hiring of Steve Kerr as head coach, one-time teammate of Michael Jordan, in 2014. Kerr’s remarkable winning record as a 5-time NBA Champion during his playing days provided the springboard to greatness that the Warriors required, making them into perhaps the most dominant team in modern basketball. Under Kerr’s guidance, the team has won 4 NBA Championships between 2015 and 2022 led by stars like Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Steph Curry, lauded by many as the best pure shooter in NBA history. After a disappointing loss to their California rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, in the 2023 Western Conference Finals, Golden State Warriors fans will be expecting success, and revenge, in 2023-24.

Golden State Warriors Rivalries

The Golden State Warriors have two local California rivalries with two very different opponents. Until recent seasons, the Warriors had spent many years looking up at the Los Angeles Lakers as the team from L.A. signed superstar after superstar and won title after title. With the Sacramento Kings, the Warriors have often been looking downward at one of the least successful teams in the NBA. The script has flipped to an extent recently, however, with the Lakers struggling in the past few seasons while the Kings and Warriors met in their first ever postseason encounter, which the Warriors won 4-3 in Game Seven after a wild and sometimes violent series both on and off the court (as even fans got into some scuffles, unfortunately). The Warriors have a far purer basketball rivalry with the Cleveland Cavaliers that developed from 2015 onward, when the teams met one another in an incredible four consecutive NBA Finals. LeBron James and the Cavs took one series, in 2016, but the Warriors prevailed in 2015, 2017, and 2018. LeBron later moved to the Lakers, pouring some extra fuel on that fiery local rivalry.

Are Golden State Warriors basketball games exciting?

Going to a Golden State Warriors game is a privilege these days for basketball fans, with one of the best coaches of all time leading one of the most talented squads that the league has seen in recent years. The crowd is accustomed to winning now and will tolerate no less, getting on the backs of opponents, officials, and even sometimes their own players if the score is not following the script. You will particularly notice the tension and excitement rising in Chase Center as the playoffs get nearer. And if you manage to score tickets to a NBA Playoffs game featuring the Golden State Warriors, grab a beer, grip the edge of your seat, and prepare to be entertained!
