Los Angeles Lakers History

If any team could give the Boston Celtics a run for legendary status within NBA history, it is undoubtedly the Los Angeles Lakers. Unlike the Celtics, often seen as the embodiment of Boston’s hard-working working-class roots, the Lakers have been known throughout the years as an extension of the glitz and glamor that goes with Los Angeles. Success came early to the Lakers, who won 5 championship titles before 1955 led by Hall-of-Famer George Mikan (considered by many to be the basketball’s first true superstar). A mostly fallow period followed until the 1980s, when Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Lakers battled Larry Bird’s Celtics for dominance over the league, emerging NBA Champions on 5 occasions. The early 2000s witnessed the bruising power of Shaquille O’Neal and silky skills of Kobe Bryant bring 3 more championships to Los Angeles. Bryant was also Finals MVP when he helped earn the Lakers one more championship in 2010 against their age-old rivals, the Boston Celtics. Recent years have seen starpower return to the Los Angeles Lakers in the form of Lebron James and Anthony Daniels, who helped the Lakers win the 2020 NBA championship and carried them to a somewhat-surprising appearance in the 2023 Western Conference Finals last year, where they were swept by the eventual NBA champions, the Denver Nuggets. With Lebron turning 39 in December, many Los Angeles Lakers fans go into 2023-24 praying that “the King” can pull off one more royal gambit this NBA season.

Los Angeles Lakers Rivalries

As one of the (two) greatest basketball franchises of all time, the Los Angeles Lakers have as many haters out there as fans. The team’s biggest rivalry historically has been with the only team that can challenge their title as the most successful franchise in NBA history, the Boston Celtics. This rivalry reached its peak on the court in the 1980s when the college basketball rivalry between the Lakers’ Magic Johnson and CelticsLarry Bird spilled over into several meetings in the NBA Finals, which the Celtics won 4-3 in 1984 and the Lakers won 4-2 in 1985 and 1987. All in all, the teams have met 12 times in the NBA Finals, with the Celtics winning the first eight but the Lakers winning 3 of the last 4 (most recently in 2010). The two teams are currently tied for having the most NBA championships in league history, at 17 apiece. Aside from the Celtics, the Lakers also have historic rivalries with the DP, who they faced three times in the NBA Finals (winning once, losing twice) and the SAS, who they frequently faced in the NBA Playoffs in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Local California rivalries against the Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, and Los Angeles Clippers have all been mitigated somewhat in the past by those teams not being very good, but recent improvements (especially by the modern dynasty of the GSW) has added plenty of spice into those California rivalries. There are also some other teams like the Portland Trail Blazers who consider the Lakers to be rivals, but that the Lakers mostly ignore as “just another team to beat.”

Are Los Angeles Lakers basketball games exciting?

Los Angeles Lakers basketball games at Crypto.com Arena involve much more than just 10 large men on a hardwood floor trying to put a round thing through a metal hoop. In fact, to the first time visitor, it can sometimes feel like the basketball is kind of an afterthought here, what with the elaborate buildup of cheerleaders and lasers and fireworks, and of course the popular habit of celebrity gazing to see which famous Hollywood stars are perched around the court (often as much to be seen as to see the game!). However, do not be deceived! Once the tipoff goes, Lakers fans are some of the most genuinely passionate fans of their sport in North America, and their expectations of winning mean that they will not accept second best. Cheers can change to boos and back to cheers within just a few minutes of action on the court, making any trip to see the Lakers play at Crypto.com Arena an emotional rollercoaster that you won’t soon forget!
