Alabama Crimson Tide Football

The Alabama Crimson Tide football team has been the pride and joy of the University of Alabama (which is located in the small city of Tuscaloosa) for more than 130 years, winning an impressive 18 national titles (plus 5 unclaimed titles) as well as countless conference and division honors along the way. The team also has the nation’s best bowl record in terms of appearances (73) and wins (44), boasting a record of 44-26-3. Reputedly, the team acquired the Crimson Tide moniker in 1906 after playing out a 6-6 tie against Auburn in all-white uniforms and emerging from the ruddy iron-rich soil of the field caked in red mud. A local newspaper reporter coined the nickname and it stuck. The first great period in Crimson Tide history occurred between 1969 and 1979 under ex-powerhouse lineman Paul “Bear” Bryant, who coached Alabama to three Sugar Bowl triumphs and one Orange Bowl victory while claiming six national titles. The team’s second era of dominance has come in more recent years, with coach Nick Saban, widely considered one of the best head coaches in American college football history, leading the Crimson Tide to six more national championships (via the National Championship Game or College Football Playoff National Championship) as well Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl wins. Saban also oversaw the awarding of no fewer than four Heisman Trophies to Alabama quarterbacks during his 17-year tenure (which came to an end when he retired after the 2023 season). Kalen DeBoer will take over the coaching reins in 2024, with a lot to live up to but no doubt a lot to look forward to as well.

Alabama Crimson Tide Football Rivalries

The rivalry between the Alabama Crimson Tide and their fellow Alabamans, the Auburn Tigers, is renowned nationwide for its history and ferocity. As mentioned above, the Tide owe their Crimson color to a 1906 game with the Tigers, and matchups between the two teams have been known as the Iron Bowl since 1893. The Crimson Tide also have long-standing rivalries with their neighbors to the north, the Tennessee Volunteers, as well as the LSU Tigers, Clemson Tigers, Georgia Bulldogs, Mississippi State Bulldogs, and Ole Miss Rebels. They are also part of the heated Alabama-Florida football rivalry that has become a huge deal in recent years whenever the Tide face off against the Florida Gators
