The Rocks family later moved to Brooklyn, New York City where he grew up with his six younger siblings. Interestingly, Rock's younger brothers are also in the entertainment industry.

Growing up in a predominantly white neighborhood in Brooklyn was a tough one for Rock. He endured beatings and bullying from the white students in his school until he could no longer tolerate it. Eventually, he was forced to drop out of school even though he later earned a General Education Development (GED).

A few years down the line, they relocated and lived in the working-class neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant. While his mum worked as a social worker involving persons with developmental disabilities, his dad was a newspaper delivery man and a truck driver. Sadly, his dad passed on after he had an ulcer surgery in 1988.

As far back as 1984, Chris Rock started his career in the entertainment industry as a stand-up comedian. During one of his acts in a New York City nightclub, Eddie Murphy, comedian and former SNL cast member ****picked interest in Rock and tutored him. This was the beginning of the big break in his career. In 1987, Rock landed his first movie role in Murphy's film, “Beverly Hills Cop II”. Following this, in 1988, he acted in the movie “I'm Gonna Git You Sucka”. And the stardom continues to date.

In 1991, he released his debut comedy album “Born Suspect” and in that same year appeared in the film “New Jack City”. Interestingly, he won acclaim for the role he played in the film. Following this, he was featured in Boomerang (1992) and CB4 (1993) which he wrote and produced among many others.

In 1994, Rock headlined his debut HBO comedy special titled “Big Ass Jokes,” and in 1996, he released his second HBO special, “Bring The Pain.” The latter made Rock one of the most commercially successful comedians in the entertainment industry. He later won 2 Emmy Awards for the special. Subsequently, he produced other specials such as Selective Outrage ( Netflix release 2023), Tamborine ( Netflix release 2018), Kill The Messenger (2008), Never Scared (2004), and Bigger & Blacker (1994).

In 1996, Rock was a commentator for Comedy Central's Politically Incorrect during the presidential election of that year. For this role, he earned another Emmy nomination. From 1997 - 2000, HBO aired The Chris Rock Show and even gained critical acclaim for his interviews. Through the talk show, Rock has won a total of 15 nominations and three Emmy Awards.

In the later 2000s, Rock started to work more behind the scenes, like writing and producing films. To mention a few of them, Down to Earth (2001), Pootie Tang (2001), Head of State (2003), The Longest Yard (2005), I Think I Love My Wife (2007), black comedy Death at a Funeral(2010), Amsterdam (2022), and PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (2023) among many others. Over the years, Rock has released several comedy series and documentaries that won some accolades. He also has partnered with prominent comedians and actors within the entertainment industry.

Chris Rock has been successful thus far in all his endeavors, from filmmaking to television shows and stand-up comedy. To this effect, Rock has received several accolades, including four Primetime Emmy Awards, three Grammy Awards for Best Comedy Album, and a Golden Globe Award Nomination. He ranked number 5 on both Rolling Stone's list of the 50 Best Stand-Up Comics of All Time and Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time.
