A soulful alto voice. A Grammy-winning vocalist and songwriter. Lauren Daigle became a name on the Billboard Christian chart due to the nature of her first album, How Can It Be, in 2015. Like Adele, her songs speak to emotional people and give them a sense of spirituality.
The lead single from her first album, You Say, made records. It held the number one spot on the Hot Christian Songs chart for 129 weeks, which is quite unusual for a Christian sound. As if that was not enough, she climbed back to the top in 2021 with Hold On to Me. Once more, in 2023, she did it with Thank God I Do, a song from her eponymous, pop-leaning fourth studio album.
Lauren was brought up somewhere in Lafayette, Louisiana, amidst a rich mix of gospel, zydeco, blues, and Cajun. It is only expected that, surrounded by these, her affinity for music started in childhood. But more importantly, it was during a prolonged illness that sidelined her from school for nearly two years that she wholly turned to music for solace.
With music as her resting, happy place, she honed her craft and began serving as a praise & worship leader at a local neighborhood church. Encouraged by some of her closest friends, she decided to try auditioning for American Idol in 2010. She auditioned again in 2012.
Though her Idol journey truncated, it paved the way for her run in the spotlight. In no time, her craft caught the attention of Centricity Music. This label eventually signed her as a solo artist in 2013. Her debut EP in late 2014, How Can It Be, did so well that it was remade into a full-length album.
The great performance of How Can It Be earned her a Grammy nomination and paved the way for commercial success. She then followed up with Behold: A Christmas Collection, with which she captivated the Christian community with her unusual mix of jazz-inspired yuletide classics.
Then, Lauren’s sophomore album, Look Up Child, increased her hold on the industry. The work earned multiple Grammy awards and got her even more international recognition. Subsequent releases, including her self-titled third album, anointed her talent in not just Christian but also mainstream circles.
During a rather eventful three-year journey, Lauren Daigle found her way back to her nativity in Louisiana in 2017. Buoyed by the performance of her platinum-certified debut album, How Can It Be, she had at the time gotten three Billboard Music Awards and a nomination for an American Music Award.
Returning to Louisiana brought respite from the high demands of her career. Giving into the allure of her birthplace, she rediscovered her artistic essence and started a self-renewal journey. The gritty, organic sounds of her hometown’s music scene were channeled into her sophomore album, Look Up Child.
Working with producers Jason Ingram and Paul Mabury, she decided to make a record of how she grew up musically. Hitting hard on organic instrumentation and not-held-back lyricism, she pushed limits but stayed true to her roots. The result was a body of work replete with soul-stirring vocals.
The album’s lead single, You Say, resonated deeply with people. But it also showcased vocal prowess and emotional depth. Other standout tracks, like Rescue, bore messages of hope and redemption, which is related to efforts to rediscover herself.
Ultimately, Look Up Child became a proof of Daigle's commitment to her art and her ability to find beauty in vulnerability. Returning to her roots, she created her most authentic and impactful work to date.
